About The Analysis

At Gear Analytica, we supply objective information for consumer decision making. We employ an unbiased, data-driven approach that synthesizes product attributes, retail price, and user feedback.

Unlike traditional gear reviews that may reflect individual preferences, we offer impartial analyses based on comprehensive data. We use a market-based approach to analyze the most significant factors that influence price based on product attributes, ensuring an even-handed, brand-agnostic view of what you get for your money. Our results are presented in three clear columns:

  1. Analytica Index: Our flagship ranking combines both the Value Index and Performance Index, providing a holistic evaluation of each product.
  2. Value Index: Focuses on the built-in features of a product, what those features should cost based on the market, and the retail price.
  3. Performance Index: Emphasizes real-world user experience, highlighting comfort, usability, and reliability.

This structured approach empowers consumers to make informed purchasing decisions by offering multiple perspectives and showing how products compare within the marketplace.

About The Creators

The creators of Gear Analytica, Patrick McCluskey and Matthew Renda, on the Allegheny River in Northwest Pennsylvania.

Gear Analytica was created by two college roommates, whose career paths diverged significantly only to converge again through their shared love of the outdoors.

Patrick McCluskey, a Harvard-trained engineer, produced Gear Analytica’s principle value analysis as well as the other mathematically based algorithms incorporating gear attributes, price points, and user experience.

Matthew Renda, is a long-time journalist, who has published articles in the Atlantic Monthly, Mercury News, Tahoe Quarterly, and Outside Magazine.

The two have combined their skills to create a unique website intended to be an information clearing house for news and data-driven analysis of market trends and developments in the outdoor gear industry.

They first met as students of University of Colorado Boulder in the early 2000’s and while one majored in science and the other in literature, they became friends through shared experiences, rock climbing in Boulder Creek Canyon and El Dorado Canyon. They used Boulder as a jumping off point to explore areas as diverse as Hueco Tanks in Texas, Enchanted Tower in New Mexico, Jack’s Canyon in Arizona and other rock climbing locales throughout Southern California and the Cascades.

They later incorporated several backpacking forays into Rocky Mountain National Park, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and beyond. More recently, they have undertaken cycling trips in Eastern Europe and Taiwan.

While Matthew Renda spent his career writing about various political battles over the Great Outdoors, mainly in the American West, Patrick McCluskey focused his efforts in the outdoor industry, using his engineering and design skills to create innovative products for a leading outdoor manufacturer.

The two wayfarers have combined their complimentary skills and varied experiences to return to the core function that lays at the heart at what they both do – provide valuable insight through unvarnished, unbiased information collection and presentation all aimed at helping, you curious reader, make wise decisions.

The third member of our team is our editor-in-chief, Kyle Magin.

Kyle joins us from Durham, North Carolina, where he’s a freelance content designer, editor, and travel writer.

As a relatively new transplant to the Old North State, he enjoys checking out the state and national parks and especially the Outer Banks’ pair of national seashores. Kyle’s outdoor adventure experience is extensive—he’s led a backpacking trip to the summit of Mt. Whitney, explored little-known Western mountain ranges like Nevada’s Rubies and California’s Trinities on hiking trips, and enjoys winter camping at Lassen Volcanic National Park.

HIs professional career began as a newspaper reporter in Lake Tahoe, which he parlayed into editing the regional Tahoe Quarterly magazine. Covering everything from wildfires to endurance races, Kyle’s passionate about the outdoors—both its opportunities and challenges. As a travel journalist, Kyle has filed stories on the Adirondacks in Upstate New York, Michigan’s West Coast, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec.

At Gear Analytica, Kyle’s focus is editing and promoting a website that makes it easy for readers to identify the best gear for their next great adventure.
