North Face continues its strong performance with multiple freestanding models in the top spots, while Big Agnes captures four positions in the top 10 with versatile designs for every type of backpacker.

This month’s comprehensive tent rankings showcase notable diversity across brands, designs and weight categories. From budget-friendly options under $200 to specialized alpine shelters for mountain expeditions, our top 10 features something for every type of backpacking trip. Solo hikers will find purpose-built durable shelters like the Sheep Mountain 1, while group adventurers have excellent options with the Clearwing 3 for weekend trips and the C Bar 3 for longer treks.

Whether you’re planning summer thru-hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail, weekend wilderness escapes to national parks or preparing for alpine adventures, the May rankings combine performance metrics, value calculations and real user experiences to identify the best backcountry tents across all price points.

The North Face Continues to Dominate

The North Face notched three of the top four tent models in our analysis for the second consecutive month, although the order was shuffled. This demonstrates the company known for their technical apparel also makes affordable backpacking tents that offer reasonable trail weights, weather protection and convenient features at an attractive price point.

The No. 1 spot belongs to The North Face Stormbreak 2, a budget-friendly backpacking shelter that excels with top-tier user satisfaction, exceptional value for money, thoughtful design features including convenient twin-zip vestibules with stowable doors and proven long-term durability that consistently earns praise from outdoor enthusiasts across multiple platforms.

The Trail Lite 2 climbed from No. 10 last month to No. 2 in May, earning praise for livability and easy setup. The Stormbreak 3, which held the top spot last month, now sits at No. 4 but still offers exceptional value with the lowest price in our top 10 at just $154 and a massive $271 in Extra Value – making it one of the best budget backpacking tents of 2025.

“Two of the tents were in the top four last month, and they actually just switched positions, but they remain in the top four,” said Gear Analytica Chief Technical Officer Patrick McCluskey.

The consistent dominance of The North Face at the top of the backpacking tent rankings speaks to their business model but also broader industry trends.

“I think that they might have some advantages over other brands, and they can buy in larger volumes,” McCluskey said. “And then there’s also a belief among competitors that they use tents as a little bit of a loss leader, because in terms of revenue, they don’t bring in as much revenue off of tents, so they don’t need to make as much margin there.”

This analysis aligns with broader outdoor industry trends, where technical apparel is leading the market while camping equipment sales lag behind.

Despite any potential pricing strategy, The North Face’s tents clearly perform well with users in real-world conditions. “Their tents are obviously performing well with consumers,” McCluskey said. “The people who buy them like them. They make tents for everything. They make tents for the casual backpacker, ultralight backpacker, expedition tents, all sorts.”

Big Agnes Makes Strong Showing

Perhaps overshadowed by The North Face’s dominance at the top, Big Agnes made an equally impressive showing in the ultralight and specialized tent categories this month.

Big Agnes had the most tents in the top 10, securing four spots in the top 10 with its versatile lineup of lightweight backpacking shelters. The solo-friendly Sheep Mountain 1 led the charge at No. 5, followed by the spacious Blacktail Hotel 3 at No. 7, the budget-conscious C Bar 3 at No. 9 and the innovative Salt Creek SL2 rounding out the list.

The Sheep Mountain 1 stands out as the lone solo shelter in our top 10, offering backpackers palatial 24-square-foot accommodations at a budget-friendly $195 – making it the rare one-person tent that doesn’t force solitary adventurers to sacrifice comfort for weight savings. This durable option provides exceptional value for solo hikers looking for a reliable shelter for multi-day trips.

“Big Agnes has a tent line that can go up against anybody in the industry,” McCluskey said. “They’re lesser known for clothes and backpacks and things like that, but they’re very well known for their tents.”

The Blacktail Hotel 3 impresses with its colossal 37-square-foot vestibule and spacious 44-square-foot interior, making it ideal for campers who want extra room for gear storage or lounging during inclement weather. This design makes it perfect for extended basecamp-style trips where comfort and gear organization is a priority.

The Big Agnes Salt Creek SL2 offers a unique feature that sets it apart in our rankings of the best lightweight tents for couples.

“It’s the only tent in the top 10 that has three doors,” McCluskey said. “It has two side doors and then one front door. So when you open all those up, it just really is wide open… a lot of convenience in accessing your gear or getting in and out of the tent in different ways.”

Sierra Designs Rises in the Rankings

Sierra Designs has made significant gains in our May tent rankings, with two models claiming spots in the top 10. The Clearwing 3 moved up from No. 9 to No. 3 from April to May and the Convert 3 moved into the top 10 for the first time, offering exceptional value for backpackers seeking versatile shelters.

“Pretty good showing from them to get a couple of spots… basically taking up the spots in the top seven that didn’t go to The North Face or Big Agnes,” McCluskey said.
