Eureka!, a subsidiary of Johnson Outdoors, dominated the February Backpacking Tent Rankings after the brand’s announced discontinuation last October prompted steep discounts across their product line.

The Eureka Midori 2-Person Tent claimed the top spot in the Analytica Index, while its 1-person and 3-person variants also reached Summit Tier status. The Eureka Summer Pass 3 secured the tenth position, giving the brand an impressive four spots in the Summit Tier.

“These tents are heavily discounted right now, nearly half off at Backcountry,” says Gear Analytica Chief Technical Officer Patrick McCluskey. “At $100 for a two-person tent, they’re amazingly affordable despite being slightly heavier than competitors.”

McCluskey cautions that warranty coverage and replacement parts may become challenging to obtain due to the brand’s discontinuation. However, he notes that the tents maintain respectable standings in the Performance Index, which evaluates user experience independent of price considerations.

The Marmot Superalloy 2 made its Summit Tier debut in the Analytica Index, which factors in both price-to-specification ratios and user reviews. “At 2.7 pounds for a two-person tent, it qualifies as ultralight,” McCluskey explains. The heavily discounted tent has also broken into the Performance Index top ten. 

“I’d say this is a pretty screaming deal for an ultralight,” McCluskey says. 

Marmot secured another victory with the Tungsten UltraLight 3 claiming fifth place.

Alps Mountaineering’s Chaos 3-Person Tent maintained its Summit Tier position for the second consecutive month, representing another success for the Missouri-based manufacturer. Black Diamond also joined the Summit Tier with their Mega Bug 4-Person Tent.

“The Mega Bug is essentially a sleeping bug net,” McCluskey explains. “While it effectively keeps insects and snakes at bay, it lacks a rain fly for weather protection. However, for fair-weather camping, it offers an affordable, well-reviewed option for four people.” 

“The tent has proven extremely popular with purchasers, ranking third in the Performance Index with a near-perfect 4.9-star rating,” McCluskey adds. 

NEMO and Sierra Designs rounded out the month’s Summit Tier achievements. 

Sierra Designs, based in Boulder, Colorado, dominated the Value Index even more than Eureka! did the Analytica Index, capturing seven of the top ten positions, including the top two spots and three in the top four.

The Value Index analyzes tent features according to price irrespective of user experience.

The Sierra Designs Meteor 2 Tent deserves special mention, ranking seventh on the Value Index and fourth on the Analytica Index, bolstered by consistently positive reviews.

The NEMO Dragonfly 1-Person Tent maintained its dominance atop the Performance Index for the fourth straight month. The company’s two-person Dragonfly Bikepack variant has also garnered significant praise from reviewers and landed in the eight spot on the Performance Index.

One of the main takeaways from the analysis is that steep discounts are available for high-quality well reviewed tents. 

In some cases this is due to business considerations, in other cases it’s seasonal as manufacturers and retailers look to clear inventory as they turn their eye toward new products, according to McCluskey. 

The unprecedented nature of the amount and number of discounts signals that now is a good time to purchase a tent. 

“These winter months seem to be offering some exceptional deals,” McCluskey says. “Retailers appear to be clearing inventory. We’re seeing discounts as deep as 55% off on some of the top-ranked tents – deeper than we’ve typically observed in our tracking.”
